The DataMatrix code: what is inside a marking code

A small square code holds the product number, a serial number and a security part.

DataMatrix is a square 2D code that stores a lot of data in a small area and can still be read when partly damaged. In marking systems it is usually encoded in the GS1 format.

A marking code has several parts: the product identifier (GTIN), a unique serial number for each item and a cryptographic part that protects the code from forgery. Some product groups carry extra data as well. The serial number and security part are what make every item individual and verifiable.

To be readable, the code must be applied with enough size, contrast and print quality, using thermal transfer or industrial printers and verifier scanners that grade code quality. BDB supplies this equipment.
